POTENTIAL RISKS DURING RAMADAN

There are several potential risks for patients with diabetes in association with prolonged fasting.

Therefore, it is important to increase patients’ awareness and help them to avoid those risks without losing the joy and spiritual experience of Ramadan. Many of these risks can be minimized by proper nutrition.

Goals of Ramadan Nutrition Plan are:

1

Avoidance of hypoglycemia especially during the late period of fasting before sunset

2

Avoidance of severe hyperglycemia after each of the 2 main meals

3

Avoidance of dehydration, especially in countries with prolonged fasting hours, hot climate and when Ramadan lies during the summer months

4

Avoidance of significant weight gain due to increased caloric intakes and reduced activities

5

Avoidance of electrolyte imbalance

6

Avoidance of acute renal failure in patients prone to severe dehydration, elderly individuals and patients with impaired renal function
